What does the Motorway ends 1 mile sign mean?

The motorway ends in 1 mile. Get ready for a road where motorway rules no longer apply.

What it means

Motorway regulations end at the distance shown.

The crossed-out motorway symbol means the end of the motorway, and the distance tells you how far away that is.

Get ready for a different speed limit and for road users who are not allowed on motorways, such as cyclists, pedestrians and slow vehicles.

Where you'll see it

On the main carriageway before the end of a motorway.

Rules to know

  • The sign is located on the main carriageway to show the distance to the end of the motorway.

Know Your Traffic Signs, p. 104

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Carrying on at motorway speed after the end.

Instead: The speed limit may change at the end of the motorway. Check the signs.
