What does the Hump bridge sign mean?

Warns of a hump bridge ahead. Slow down: you cannot see over the top, and the road may be narrow.

Also known as: Humpback bridge

What it means

There is a bridge with a steep hump ahead, which can hide oncoming traffic and unsettle a vehicle taken too fast.

The symbol shows the road rising over the arch of a bridge.

Slow down before the bridge. You may not see vehicles coming the other way until the top, and many hump bridges are only wide enough for one vehicle.

Where you'll see it

Before old bridges over canals, rivers and railways, mostly on country roads.

Rules to know

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Keeping your speed over the bridge.

Instead: At speed, a hump bridge can make a vehicle lift and lose grip. Slow down before you reach it.
