What does the Swing bridge sign mean?

Warns of a bridge ahead that opens or swings to let boats through. Be ready to stop if it is open.

Also known as: Lifting bridge sign

What it means

The bridge ahead can open, lift or swing aside for boats, so the road may be closed for a time.

The symbol shows part of the bridge raised above the water.

Look out for traffic signals or barriers at the bridge, and stop when they tell you to. Never try to cross while the bridge is moving.

Where you'll see it

Before bridges over canals, rivers and harbours that open for shipping.

Rules to know

Common mistakes
