What does the End signal sign mean?

Shows that the temporary restrictions or warnings shown by earlier motorway signals have ended.

What it means

The temporary restrictions shown by the signals before this one no longer apply.

After an advised speed, a lane closure or a warning, END tells you the restriction is over.

Speed up again only when it is safe, and remember the normal speed limit for the road still applies.

Where you'll see it

On motorway signals after the end of a temporary restriction or hazard.

Rules to know

  • The signal means the end of temporary restrictions.

Know Your Traffic Signs, p. 105

  • Only increase your speed when you pass a signal that is not flashing, or a sign displaying a national speed limit or the word 'END', and you are sure it is safe to do so.

    The Highway Code, Rule 257

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Accelerating hard straight away.

Instead: END lifts the temporary restriction. Build up speed gradually and only when it is safe.
