What does the Advised speed sign mean?

A speed in lights with flashing amber lamps, but no red ring, is the maximum speed advised for the conditions.

Also known as: Temporary maximum speed advised

What it means

The speed shown is the temporary maximum speed advised for the traffic conditions ahead, such as queues, an incident or fog.

The amber lamps flash to warn of a hazard ahead. The number is advice for that hazard. If the same number were inside a red ring, it would be a legal limit.

Slow down to the speed shown or below, and only speed up again once you pass a signal that is not flashing, or one showing the national speed limit or END.

Where you'll see it

On motorway signals above each lane, or at the side of the motorway.

Rules to know

  • The signal shows the temporary maximum speed advised for prevailing traffic conditions.

Know Your Traffic Signs, p. 105

  • Variable speed limits shown in a red circle are mandatory. Speed limits that are not shown in a red circle are the maximum speeds advised for the prevailing conditions.

Know Your Traffic Signs, p. 104

  • Amber flashing lights warn of a hazard ahead. Reduce your speed, and only increase it when you pass a signal that is not flashing, or a sign showing a national speed limit or END.

    The Highway Code, Rule 257

  • You must not exceed a speed limit displayed within a red circle.

    The Highway Code, Rule 261

Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Ignoring it because it is only advice.

Instead: It warns that there is a hazard ahead, such as queuing traffic or an incident. Slow down.
